Australia is one of the most interesting countries on Earth. It is both a country and a continent.
Long ago, Australia became separated from other lands. Because it was isolated for millions of years, many animals evolved differently from animals found elsewhere.
Kangaroos are perhaps the most famous Australian animals. They use powerful back legs to travel by hopping.
Koalas are another well known animal. They spend much of their time resting in eucalyptus trees.
Australia also has deserts, rainforests, mountains, and long coastlines. Because of these different environments, many kinds of animals and plants can live there.
Today, Australia protects many of its unique animals and natural places. Scientists continue learning about the country's incredible wildlife and geography.
